Lifting Corporate Barriers to Women (Role Models)

Over the last 50 years women have had to make choices about how to balance a successful career with a fulfilling personal life or family. Whilst many women previously took time out, often at the expense of their career, the tide is finally turning. We welcome to this panel debate some of the most successful women in their fields. We’ll be asking them to outline to the next generation of female leaders how they achieved their own personal working goals and what support is available along the way.

This debate will raise questions like, what obstacles have the panel had to overcome? How have their experiences made it easier for the next generation of women? Have they achieved a personal work/life balance and do their employers or member organisations support them?

Claudio Vespucci, responsible for HP’s diversity programmes within Europe, Middle East, Africa

Women play a key role in our business and in industry worldwide. As a matter of fact worldwide women-owned firms comprise 25-33% of business in the formal economies and women-owned business have invested over $170 billion in computer technology and make over 39% of computer technology decisions.

Our diversity and inclusion strategy is a key element in ensuring that our culture is inclusive and welcoming to all our employees, including women. The diverse make-up of our senior management is an example of the way in which women play a central role within HP. For example, Ann Livermore, who leads our HP Services business unit. Of course, Carly Fiorina’s management of the entire organisation is also a great inspiration to women throughout the IT industry.

Claudio’s presentation will provide an overview of HP. He will also talk about their structure, strategy, values, diversity and work/life program, career opportunities, work environment, etc. Claudio of course will be available to answer any questions you may have on the importance of Women in Leadership at HP.

Claudio Vespucci is currently responsible for HP’s diversity programs within Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. His primary responsibilities include the identification, development and cultivation of diversity sourcing channels within the region, in order to enhance HP’s ability to attract diverse talent through focused outreach programs. In addition Claudio is charged with the responsibility of developing and implementing diversity programs and initiatives intended to facilitate the retention and development of diverse talent within the company. Claudio joined HP in the U.S. over 6 years ago. His background also includes training, relocations, and staffing. He is currently located in Milan, Italy.

Nina is Leader of General Electric Corporate Learning Services Europe in Brussels, Belgium. She joined GE in 1996 in the Plastics Division in various HR roles (Manager Organization Development and Staffing, HR Generalist) after 14 years with Avery Dennison Europe.
Her main focus areas in her current role are Leadership Development for European Leaders, Integration Programs for Acquired Businesses and GE Programs for Customers.
She is serving on the Executive Board of the European GE Women’s Network and is President of GE Elfun Volunteers Belgium.

Workshop

Nina will run a workshop that will outline one successful program currently targeted solely at female leaders in our company, to support them at the stage in their career to break through that perceived glass ceiling and joining the executive business and functional leaders in GE.

BAE Systems Presentation

Christine Tovee, SIGMA graduate, joined BAE SYSTEMS and moved to the United Kingdom four years ago. She holds two engineering degrees: a B.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto and an S.M. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Within BAE SYSTEMS, she has worked on a variety of systems including Ground Based Air Defence, telecommunications satellites, and flight controls for the S-92 helicopter. Currently, she is involved in the integration of the combat system on the Type 45 Destroyer as the Trials Assurance Manager.

Grace Johnstone, Flight Test Engineer, started at BAE SYSTEMS in August 1992 on a Electrical Craft Apprenticeship. On the completion of her apprenticeship she worked as an aircraft electrician for 4.5 years on development Tornados and Hawks. In July 2000 she joined Flight Test as a specialist on the Typhoon project assessing the integration of the Avionic systems on the aircraft during flight.

Design driven innovation through the eyes of Ferrari is a seminar that introduces an approach to innovation that puts the semantic dimension on the same playing field as the technological and functional ones. Better yet, it puts product language innovation in the driver’s seat. The Women's Engineering Society

The Women's Engineering Society "promotes the education, training and practice of engineering among women". We work to increase awareness of the importance of engineering and technology, and the contribution women can make to the field. Many applicants find when they are invited to the selection process, the use of psychometric tests can be quite daunting. As the gateway to entry into most organisations it is critical attendees understand how to perform at their best. During the clinic, Edna will give advice on how to prepare for and manage psychometric tests for job selection. Senior Divisional Manager for Topcareers

A native of County Sligo in Ireland, Carole took a degree in media and cultural studies in the UK and subsequently worked in both political and social research across Europe. Carole joined the topcareers group in 1999 and is now editor of Top Technical Graduate magazine and an editorial manager on the MBA Career Guide.

Of mixed-race parentage she has a strong interest in diversity in the workplace and has spearheaded topcareers’ initiatives in this area, which include the UK’s first Women in Leadership and Diversity for Leadership forums, which she is launching across Europe in 2004/2005. Extensively travelled, Carole speaks English, French and Portuguese. In her spare time she is a keen and highly competitive sportsperson.

Nunzio Quacquarelli
Managing Director of Topcareers

Of Italian/Swiss origin, Nunzio grew up in Manchester, obtained an MA from Cambridge University and an MBA at The Wharton School, where he majored in finance and entrepreneurship. He has experience working in strategy consulting in London and Italy, with a focus on marketing and product development.

Topcareers was founded as an entrepreneurial project at Wharton in 1990 and Nunzio resumed full-time involvement in 1993.

Glenda Stone is Chief Executive of Aurora Gender Capital Management, an independent organisation that works with companies to attract, retain, develop and promote women. Aurora also delivers a European corporate and entrepreneurial women’s network (The Aurora Women’s Network) that works for the economic advancement of women and has over 10,000 members.

Glenda is European Woman of Achievement for Entrepreneurialism 2002. Her career began as a teacher in the Australian outback; then moved into curriculum and policy development specialising in gender, language and power; and then following a number of further positions through to managing the economic portfolio for women within the Queensland Treasury. Glenda’s education includes a Masters of Education majoring in women’s studies.
