Cake Decorating Made Easy for Kids
By admin | May 21, 2011
Baking and decorating a cake is a great way to spend time with kids while simultaneously teaching important skills like measuring and fine motor skills. Before beginning you should make sure you have a few things: the ingredients for the cake you wish to bake, aprons for everyone (or clothes that are ok to get dirty), bowls, a whisk, spatulas, piping bags and tips, a sponge or rag, and icing. You can make icing from scratch but it’s usually easier with kids to just buy the icing.
When it comes time to decorate the cake, first demonstrate on a piece of wax paper. Allow time for questions, then give the opportunity to practice on wax paper. A good time to do this would be while the cake is baking and cooling. When it is time to move on to the cake, make sure that it is fully cooled. Sticking it in the fridge when it comes out of the oven can expedite the cooling process. Start with a flat layer of icing applied by spatula. Remember that the child may need your help so stick around. After the first layer of icing, you are ready for the fun part: piping!
